Country Farmhouse Senior Portraits

Several years ago, I had a late autumn senior portrait session with a beautiful girl in the Tiffin area.  Morgan wanted to keep things local, but there was brief discussion about shooting at the family homestead in the Upper Sandusky area.  The session went beautifully in Tiffin (check it out here), but I was always curious about that alternate location.  Fast forward a few years, and Morgan’s mom, Nikki, contact me for her second daughter Kennedy’s senior portraits. This time, the family farm location was a firm choice.

It’s always a little nerve-wracking showing up for a shoot at a location I’ve never visited before, and this was no exception.  Happily, this spot was a country paradise and we had no shortage of gorgeous scenery to shoot against.  Of course, it didn’t hurt that Kennedy is every bit as beautiful as her sister Morgan! We spent a few glorious, sunny hours capturing the set you see below.  Mind you, this was July, and while the greenery was lush and plentiful, the temps were hot, the air was sticky, and the bugs were hungry.  Kennedy was a trooper, though, and the results were well worth the effort.

I love the dress Kennedy chose for her first set; it was the perfect punch of color agains the whitewashed barn exterior.

Using Contrast in Senior Portraits for Focus and Impact

Kennedy had a number of light colored clothing choices, so we put some thought into where to shoot what for maximum effect. Her second outfit was a light, creamy colored romper. I chose a long corridor of greenery as the backdrop to provide contrast and keep the focus on her.

Vintage Truck in Senior Portraits Provides Interest and Sentimental Significance

A happy discovery was this vintage truck at the back of Kennedy’s grandparents’ property. I love incorporating elements like this, as they can provide both variation and some personal significance to a session.  This set is one of my personal favorites.

Shooting Senior Portraits on Family Property

There were so many interesting corners of this family’s property to choose from.  Our next stop was a few steps away in front of Kennedy’s grandfather’s workshop.  I do appreciate variety in a session, and this spot afforded some architectural interest and a different vibe from the green spaces that dominated the scenery.  Next, we spent a few minutes at a small pond on the property where we pulled Morgan in for a quick sisterly shot (minus the youngest, Leah) and a few at the boat on the shores before the mosquitos drove us away.

Senior Portraits on a Pond

Still more rustic scenery awaited across the street where another, larger pond with a nicely situated dock allowed us to capture this set.

The lighting in this area was insane, so we changed into another outfit and continued shooting.

Country Farmhouse Senior Portraits

Our final stop was back at the farmhouse. We had been waiting for the sun to drop far enough to shoot in this spot, and our timing was perfect.

Four-leggeds in Senior Pictures

Just like her sister, Kennedy wanted to include one of her favorite kitties in her senior portraits.  This guy was a reluctant subject, but we did managed to capture a few.

A big THANK YOU to Kennedy her mom Nikki for coming back to me for this session.  I look forward to reconvening when Leah is a senior!!
